University of Ghana has adopted Waterz Yidana’s Award Winning Play titled “Madman and the Drunkards” for their Postgraduate Students to Study
Waterz Yidana is a top Ghanaian playwright, poet, activist and publisher. He wrote his first play, ‘The Mango Seed’ in 2007, and it was published in 2013. In 2015, a Theatre Arts student of the University of Ghana directed this play as his project work. The Mango Seed won the 2019 Efo Kodjo Mawugbe’s Prize in Drama awarded by the Ghana Association of Writers (GAW)
n 2016, ‘Madman and the Drunkards’ together with “The Poetry, Letters & Short Stories of Waterz Yidana’ were also written and published.
Madman and the Drunkards got so much good and critical reviews and national and international attention that it became an instant hit. The Ghana Education Service approved and recommended it for schools.
It won the Efo Kodjo Mawugbe’s Prize for Drama in 2017 in Ghana, awarded by the Ghana Association of Writers. In 2019, the University of Ghana requested to use it as a subject text for Graduate students and for stage performance which was granted. Waterz Yidana emerged as the winner of the prestigious 40under40 Awards in the category of Authorship and Creative Writing in 2019. He has been nominated for other awards and accolades, including the Social Entrepreneur Of The Year Award. The Ghana Arts and Culture Awards has also nominated Mr. Yidana to win “Discovery of the Year Award” for his great contribution in the arts…
Over five thousand (5000) copies of MADMAN AND THE DRUNKARDS were sold in Ghanaian schools….
Discussions are underway with the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) to get it used as a subject text in Ghanaian and West African Secondary Schools.
This satirical comedy has found its way into the libraries of prestigious universities abroad, such as: Harvard University Library, Oxford University Library, Stanford University Library, Princeton University Library and other University Libraries across the world.
Waterz Yidana has met with almost all the legendary writers from Ghana and the rest of West Africa including Wole Soyinka who he considers his mentor. He has many celebrity friends, and Professors.
Yidana is much intersted in plays, poetry, essays and activism. He makes very good use of Social Media, especially Facebook where he writes almost on daily basis.
He is a columnist for GhanaWeb, ModernGhana and writes for Junior Graphic and The Mirror, Ghana’s second most widely read National newspaper. He has been on JoyNews TV for an interview, Citi FM, Radio XYZ, GTV and other media platforms to talk about his books and writings. He is a member of the Ghana Association of Writers (GAW) and is part of a 5-Member Committee called (GAWSOP) Ghana Association of Writers School Outreach Programme.
He is also the Chief Executive Officer and Founder of Makola Books Limited, a publishing company based in Accra, which he uses to publish his works and the works of other writers in Ghana and the rest of Africa. The publishing house has so far published four books, with which three have won literary awards in the country. THE MANGO SEED, MADMAN AND THE DRUNKARDS, and THE SLUMMER’S CURSE by Azags Gandaah have all won awards.
Makola Books Limited has received about seven books from writers across Africa and work is ongoing to select the very best ones for publication next year. Mr. Yidana is writing his next two plays and one of them is based on the life story of one of Africa’s greatest leaders, Thomas Sankara. The book is titled “THOMAS SANKARA’S GHOST” and the other one is titled “THE LAND OF GOD”
Waterz Yidana has said that the life of Thomas Sankara, just like Dr. Kwame Nkrumah and Patrice Lumumba is worthy of emulation, therefore his next book is solely to promote the ideals of this selfless and brave African leader.
