“Gospel Music Debate: Akesse Brempong Asserts That God Can Inspire Anyone to Worship Him”

The definition of gospel music has been debated within the music industry. Some argue that there is a distinction between gospel music and Christian music. Gospel music is said to focus solely on the life of Jesus Christ and his teachings, while Christian music is more broadly associated with the Christian religion as a whole.

Some theologians suggest that the distinction between Christian and gospel music depends on the artist behind the music. Akesse Brempong, a Gospel musician, emphasized on Joy FM’s Showbiz A-Z that God can use anyone, even donkeys, to share his message. He mentioned that some gospel songs have surprised writers and believed that God can inspire anyone to praise and worship Him.

Nii Ayite Hammond, the Channel Manager for Hope TV, also spoke on the show and stated that a song does not become gospel simply because it mentions God. He mentioned that Kwabena Kwabena’s song featuring Obaapa Christy, ‘Fakye Me’, is not a gospel song, despite touching on the theme of forgiveness and featuring a gospel musician. Nii clarified that a song qualifies as gospel only if it directly reflects the teachings of Jesus Christ.

He further highlighted that the personality behind a song also matters in defining it as gospel. For instance, he questioned whether a song like “Aseda” by King Paluta should be categorized as gospel, stating that the artist’s beliefs and values are essential in making that determination.
