  • Accra, Ghana – January 7, 2025 – Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin has been officially sworn in as the Speaker of the 9th Parliament of the Fourth Republic of Ghana. This historic event follows his endorsement by President-elect John Dramani Mahama.

The ceremony took place on the parliamentary floor, where Majority Leader Cassiel Ato Forson nominated Bagbin for the role. Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Minority Leader, seconded the nomination, despite expressing concerns over the President-elect’s endorsement process.

Chief Justice Gertrude Esaaba Torkornoo administered the Oath of Office, confirming Bagbin’s position as Speaker. In his acceptance speech, Bagbin called for unity and pledged impartiality in overseeing the operations of the House.

Bagbin’s re-election solidifies his position as a key figure in Ghana’s parliamentary history, having served as Speaker of the 8th Parliament. With decades of experience in governance, law, and parliamentary leadership, Bagbin is poised to lead the 9th Parliament with fairness and a deep commitment to democracy.

As the National Democratic Congress (NDC) holds a significant majority in Parliament, Bagbin’s leadership will be instrumental in shaping the nation’s legislative future. His distinguished profile includes serving as Minister for Water Resources, Works and Housing, and later Minister for Health.

Bagbin has also represented Ghana on various international platforms, including the Africa-Caribbean-Pacific Group (ACP) and the European Union Joint Parliamentary Assembly (EUJPA). He is a former President of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) and the Conference of Speakers and Presiding Officers of Parliaments in Africa.

With 43 years of legal practice, Bagbin remains a member of the Ghana Bar Association. His re-election as Speaker marks a significant moment in Ghana’s parliamentary history, and his leadership will be crucial in navigating the country’s political landscape.
