President John Dramani Mahama Recognizes Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as Worthy Adversary.

In his inaugural speech during the swearing-in ceremony in Accra on Tuesday, January 7, 2025, President John Dramani Mahama reflected on his history with former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, highlighting the mutual respect and camaraderie that have defined their relationship over the years.

Mahama recalled the transitional exercise they shared eight years ago, on January 7, 2017, when he was the outgoing president and Akufo-Addo was the incoming president. He emphasized that despite being from opposing political parties, they have always shared a sense of mutual respect.

The President noted that Akufo-Addo has consistently greeted him with warmth, a firm handshake, and a smile, even referring to him as “Johnnie.” Mahama expressed admiration for Akufo-Addo, describing him as a “worthy opponent” as they began their national political careers in Parliament together in 1996.

This gesture of goodwill and respect comes after Mahama secured 6,328,397 votes (56.55%) in the 2024 presidential election, defeating Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).¹ President Akufo-Addo had formally congratulated President-elect Mahama on his victory, ensuring a smooth transfer of power.
