The Founder of the Guinness Ghana DJ Awards, Merqury Quaye, has publicly articulated his concerns regarding remarks made by Kojo Manuel, one of the award recipients from this year’s event. Kojo Manuel expressed dissatisfaction over the joint award he received in the Best MC/Hypeman category, asserting his belief that he should have been the sole winner.
Kojo, who serves as a radio presenter at YFM in Accra, was awarded the title of Best MC/Hypeman of the Year at the 2024 Ghana DJ Awards, which took place at the Palms Convention Centre in Accra, Ghana, on November 9, 2024, alongside MC Portfolio.

In a recent interview on 3 Music TV, Kojo commented: “I do not believe there is such a thing as a tie. I do not think that Ghana would conduct an election and declare both the NPP and NDC as winners. I find it difficult to comprehend the rationale behind the tie and have not received any official explanation from the Ghana DJ Awards regarding this matter.” He further stated, “It is widely acknowledged the effort I put forth during the year under review, so I find it perplexing what is being used as a basis for comparison. Unfortunately, we have reached a point where one must justify their award…”
In response to Kojo’s remarks during an appearance on Hitz FM, Merqury Quaye expressed his disappointment. Addressing host Doreen Avio, he stated, “I am quite disappointed in Kojo Manuel for his comments. While it is acceptable to express dissatisfaction, how he has approached this issue is, in my view, unacceptable. He has indicated disbelief in the existence of ties, which is unfortunate, especially coming from an individual of his standing. He should be aware that ties can occur in numerous competitions. For instance, in football, matches can end in a draw. In the context of award shows, one can reference the Grammys or the BET Awards. Notably, in 2015, there was a tie involving Wizkid, yet Sarkodie did not voice similar grievances as Kojo Manuel has.”
Mercury further questioned why Kojo Manuel did not raise concerns regarding the prior awards he had received from the same organization. “Moreover, he should temper his self-importance; it is the same program that recognized him as the best MC, an achievement he has celebrated across various platforms. He should reflect on the fact that this is the same institution he is now critiquing. Why did he not inquire why he was awarded Best Hypeman in the previous year? It is disheartening to see such inconsistency in his stance,” he concluded.
The Guinness Ghana DJ Awards is organized by Merqury Republic.
