Proprietor of Big Six School Arrested for Unlawfully Detaining Students During BECE in Meduma

Mr. Afoakwa Sarpong, the proprietor of The Big Six Educational Complex in Meduma, has been arrested for allegedly unlawfully detaining two students during the ongoing Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

The arrest took place on Monday, June 17, 2025, at 2:00 PM. It was carried out by Nana Adu Mensah Asare, the Kwabre East Municipal Director of Education, with assistance from the Directorate’s Public Relations Officer, Ms. Mavis Okyere Anane. Mr. Sarpong was subsequently handed over to the Mamponteng District Police Command.

Preliminary investigations indicate that Mr. Sarpong confined two Junior High School candidates in a separate room during the Mathematics paper, reportedly because they had not paid their registration fees. The students were allegedly released only after the examination had concluded.

Both education authorities and law enforcement officials have condemned the incident as an unlawful deprivation of liberty. A formal police investigation into the matter is currently underway.

Deputy Superintendent of Police and Head of the Public Affairs Unit in the Ashanti Region, Godwin Ahianyo, confirmed Mr. Sarpong’s arrest and issued a stern warning, stating that such actions will not be tolerated, especially during a critical national examination.

The Mamponteng District Police Command has assured the public that all necessary legal measures are being pursued and promised to provide further updates as the investigation unfolds.
