More than 800 journalists in good standing are expected to vote on Monday, June 30, 2025, to elect new national and regional leaders for the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA). These leaders will guide the association’s affairs for the next three years.
The elections will be held from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with 12 candidates competing for six national executive positions and 49 others running for various regional roles.
Presidential Race
The contest for the prestigious position of GJA National President is expected to be a fierce competition between the incumbent, Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, and respected media trainer Charles Yao Mawusi. Observers have described this race as one “fit for the gods.”
Mr. Dwumfour is seeking re-election on the theme of continuity, promising to deepen media freedom and improve journalist safety. His challenger, Mr. Mawusi, is campaigning on a platform of transparent leadership, increased funding for media development, and capacity building for journalists.
Other Key Contests
The Vice President position is also shaping up to be closely contested, with Mary Mensah of the Daily Graphic facing off against Rebecca Ekpe of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC). The two previously competed for the Public Affairs position three years ago.
In the race for General Secretary, current Organising Secretary Dominic Hlordzi from GBC will compete against former candidate Akwasi Agyeman.
For Organising Secretary, Suleman Mustapha, the Acting Editor of Graphic Business, is running against Maxwell Kudekor, the Eastern Regional GJA Chairman.
The Public Affairs position features a contest between Zadok Kwame Gyesi, a freelancer and former journalist at Graphic Online, and Caesar Abagali of the Ghana News Agency (GNA).
The Treasurer position will see an all-female contest between Theodora A. Amedetor Yakanu from GBC and Bertha Badu-Agyei from GNA.
Regional Elections
In the regional elections, 17 out of 49 candidates are contesting positions such as Chairman, Vice-Chairman, Secretary, and Treasurer across six regions: Ashanti, Volta, Central, Upper East, Upper West, and Eastern. The remaining 31 candidates are running unopposed and will be deemed duly elected in accordance with Article 48(d)(i) of the GJA Constitution.
