Ghana’s embassy in Tehran shut with immediate effect over Iran-Israel war

The Government of Ghana has announced the immediate closure of its embassy in Tehran due to escalating tensions between Iran and Israel. This decision, aimed at protecting the lives of Ghanaians, was communicated by Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, in a social media post on Monday, June 16.

“In light of the growing conflict between Israel and Iran, the Mahama administration has urgently decided to evacuate Ghanaians residing in Iran to ensure their safety,” the minister stated. “To guarantee the safety of our embassy staff, Ghana’s embassy in Tehran has been closed with immediate effect.”
Mr. Ablakwa further revealed that evacuation efforts are underway through Iran’s land borders and will include Ghanaian diplomats, students, professionals, and other nationals currently living in the country. He assured the public that all necessary measures are being taken to facilitate the safe passage of those affected.

Additionally, the minister noted that the government is closely monitoring the evolving security situation in Israel and may issue further directives as needed. “In the meantime, we have instructed that operations at the embassy in Tel Aviv be reduced to the bare minimum, and all Ghanaians in Israel are advised to maintain close contact with our consular office,” he added.

The government reiterated its call for a peaceful, diplomatic resolution to the conflict, emphasizing that every possible effort will be made to protect the lives of Ghanaian citizens.
