NPP Sets January 31, 2026, for Presidential Primary Ahead of 2028 Elections

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has officially announced that its presidential primary will take place on Saturday, January 31, 2026. This primary is intended to select a flagbearer for the 2028 general elections.

The date was confirmed by the party’s General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua, following a crucial meeting of the National Executive Committee (NEC) on Tuesday, June 17, 2025. The decision was subsequently endorsed by the National Council.

“The Committee discussed the timing of our presidential primaries, and the National Council concluded that setting this date does not require any amendments to our Constitution. Therefore, the primaries will be held on January 31, 2026,” Mr. Kodua stated. He further clarified that the National Council has the authority to set the date without needing additional approval from the national delegates conference.

With the date established, the party is preparing for an active political season. Several prominent figures and emerging contenders are expected to enter the race, making the primaries a significant milestone in the NPP’s preparations for the upcoming 2028 elections.

In the coming weeks, the party will release detailed guidelines covering the nomination process, campaign timelines, and a code of conduct for aspirants. Party leaders have pledged to ensure a transparent and democratic process that aligns with NPP values.

Additionally, a nine-member committee, chaired by former Bekwai MP Joseph Osei Owusu, has been appointed to oversee the planning of the party’s national delegates conference set for July 2025. This meeting will consider several proposed constitutional amendments.

“As there will be proposals to amend our Constitution, a dedicated planning committee has been established to manage this process,” Mr. Kodua noted.

The announcement of the primary date marks the official start of a high-stakes internal contest that could shape the party’s direction as it approaches the 2028 general elections.
