Let Us Remain Vigilant Against Tribalism – President Mahama Urges National Unity at Prayer Day Event

President John Dramani Mahama has called on Ghanaians to unite and resist divisive forces as the country embarks on a critical journey toward healing and transformation.

Speaking at the National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving on Tuesday, July 1, President Mahama emphasized the urgent need to maintain national cohesion and mutual respect amidst growing societal tensions.

“Let us remain vigilant against the voices of tribalism, religious extremism, and political division,” he stated. “These are seeds of destruction that we must never allow to take root in our precious nation, Ghana.”

He urged Ghanaians to adopt a language of peace, compassion, and unity: “We must build bridges, not barriers, for we are one people, sharing one land and pursuing one identity and destiny.”

Leadership, Accountability, and Integrity

Reflecting on the responsibilities of public service, President Mahama stressed that leadership must be grounded in integrity and humility.

“We must hold those in authority including myself to the highest standards. Public office is not a privilege for personal gain; it is a sacred trust bestowed by the people, and a duty to serve, especially the most vulnerable.”

He reaffirmed his commitment to accountability and the rule of law, stating, “Even the office of the President, which by the grace of God I now hold, is not above the law.”

Archbishop Duncan-Williams Calls for a Renewed Vision for Ghana

Joining the national reflection, Archbishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams, the Presiding Archbishop of Action Chapel International, made a passionate appeal for renewed purpose and leadership. He urged President Mahama to fully pursue his “reset agenda” to lead Ghana toward lasting transformation.

The Archbishop painted a vision of a prosperous Ghana where citizens travel abroad not out of necessity, but for leisure: “Let us build a Ghana where people no longer seek greener pastures elsewhere but find opportunity and fulfillment right here at home.”

He encouraged the President to focus on creating an environment where local education, entrepreneurship, and ambition can thrive so success no longer requires leaving Ghana’s borders.

A Call to Action Rooted in Faith and Possibility

Drawing inspiration from the life and mission of Jesus Christ, Archbishop Duncan-Williams encouraged President Mahama to lead with unwavering faith and bold resolve, even within the constraints of a single presidential term.

“Four years may seem short, but with clear vision and decisive leadership, meaningful change is possible,” he affirmed.

Reflecting on Ghana’s past potential, the Archbishop lamented how the country once ahead of nations like Singapore, China, and Malaysia has fallen behind. His message was both a sobering reminder and a hopeful challenge: that Ghana can reclaim its promise through unity, strategic governance, and the collective will of its people.

“This is a time for faith, focus, and fearless leadership. Ghana’s future can be bright again but only if we choose to rise together.”
